Published in Hardcover by Ward Ritchie Pr (June, 1976)
Author: Ken, Murray
Average review score:

This is the only complete life tale of Earl Carroll in print
This is the only complete life tale of Earl Carroll in print. The book is a great collection of personal experiences with Mr. Carroll and second hand acounts of his life. Many of the big names in entertainment from the early 20th century crossed paths with Earl and are discussed in the text.

The book does a great job covering his life from a geeky stage hand to one of the countries most important production showman. A great read.

Book of Revelation (New Century Bible Commentary)
This is a reprint of the classic commentary by G.R. Beasley-Murray. An excellent exegetical work from a historical premillenial view-point [premillenial, but non-dispensational].

Burro Bill and me
Published in Unknown Binding by Strawberry Valley Press ()
Author: Edna Calkins Price
Average review score:

Life in the West
Burro Bill and Me, a personal memoir, shows the West in the 1930s just as it was changing from an open territory to the settled land it is now. This very literate, funny, and insightful book is a joy to read. Ms Price gave up a life as a nurse to a millionaire to travel Death Valley, Nevada, and the Arizona Strip behind a burro. The characters she meets come to life in this book; from the old prospectors, Mormon farmers, thieves, and people who would give their last bite of food to a couple of strangers. While the book is difficult to find, it's worth whatever you pay for it.

Cat in the Garden 2003 Calendar
Published in Paperback by Pomegranate (August, 2002)
Authors: Elizabeth Murray and Pomegranate Publishers
Average review score:

Absolutely Beautiful
I have this calendar hanging in my colorless office cubicle, and it brightens my workday world. Countless coworkers have come by to exclaim over the beautiful juxtaposition of cats and flowers, and it makes everybody smile.

My only tiny comment is that the calendar does not reflect the seasons--for instance, January shows a sunny garden full of gorgeous cosmos (and a cat to match). On the other hand, maybe that's a good thing, since January on the East Coast is no picnic!

I recommend this calendar to all cat lovers. Snap it up before January disappears--or keep it for the gorgeous, frameable pictures.

Catharine and Other Writings (Oxford World's Classics)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (July, 1998)
Authors: Jane Austen, Margaret Anne Doody, and Douglas Murray
Average review score:

Oh! The Joy of Jane Austen!
For those who have loved Jane Austen's more mature writings, this book is a must read. Compiled from Jane Austen's childhood notebooks, these stories are full of unmasked satire, and endless jokes, aimed to point out the absurdity of the novels of the authores' day. In her more mature years, Jane Austen learned to mask her satire and calm her wit. Such knowledge undoubtably made for better writing, but there is a great deal of enjoyment to be had from a younger pen, the open satire of a girl who was wise enough to see the folly of her times. Catharine and Other Stories will not make wise, or generally inspire, but it is delightful comic relief, as well as a window into the vivacious mind of Jane Austen, the girl.

China: the Next Superpower: Dilemmas in Change and Continuity
Published in Hardcover by Taylor & Francis Books Ltd (09 June, 1998)
Author: George Murray
Average review score:

A bit spotty; A Good Effort
This book does not say much that will not be said later about China. The title is disingenuous. He give about 5 pages to defining China as a superpower, but then spends several chapters blowtorching it.

One thing that he understands is that the China has had a *very* long time to devlop a democratic model but they have never been able to do it. He also implicitly excuses their model of government as something necessary for people who have no concept of "rule of law" (and they certainly don't have that in China, nor is it established very well in the national psyche). At least not as well as the other traditions are (Confucianism, Maoism, Daoism, Legalism).

Strengths: He understands the complex factors that go into the building of a society and a sound economy, among them being the protection of property rights and impartial law enforcement. When he gives examples, he gives enough to let us know that he is not comitting the "fallacy of composition" mistake, but not too many to bog us down with 1,001 details of the same thing.

Weaknesses: Not enough analysis of the bank loan problems, for one. Nor enough analysis of the GDP numbers. At the time of this publication, people weren't publishing enough questioning reports of China's GDP statistics.

I also question his figures about the Chinese people not having the capability of feeding the whole country. That has a distinctly Malthusian sound--something that has recieved one of the most thorough refutations of any notion in social sciences.

The book could have been taken in any number of directions at greater length. For example: He talks of the social problems that are there, such as crime and prostitution. But he did not detail where else that has happened and whether China's experience is better or worse that than of other countries under similar circumstances.

Prescient Observations:

1. The Vietnamese have developed the skills of resistance fighting as a result of many years of trying to hold back the advance of the Han Chinese and their tendency to eclipse and absorb all other indigineous cultures into which they came in contact.

2. That the China of today resembles very much the imperial China of a long time ago.

3. In general, most of the worst abuses of the Chinese are at the hands of other Chinese. This includes successive governments making mistakes that everyone else had to pay for. And the abuse of the workers by corrupt Taiwanese and Hong Kong businessmen.

Foolish Statements:

1. No, American children do not sing the "Star Spangled Banner" and salute the flag every day in class.

2. "Deplorably stupid" is not a good phrase to use to describe people who haven't had the experience of living in a Western society under a system that took hundreds of years to develop. "Inexperienced" or "behaviorally inappropriate" would have been a more useful phrase...

Cochlear Implants and Children: A Handbook for Parents, Teachers and Speech and Hearing Professionals
Published in Paperback by Alex Graham Bell Assn for Deaf (June, 1993)
Author: Nancy Ph.D Tye-Murray
Average review score:

Good auditory training resource.
The device information is out-dated and one-sided but the second half of the book is still very relevant. The entire book is worth chapters six and seven, which cover speech perception training and speech-reading training. It's a great beginning hierarchy for auditory and speech perception training with several examples.

The Complete Constitution of the United States of America

Average review score:

Complete and exhaustive index
Amazon[.com] is in error. The book is not out of print. It is basically the Constitution of the United States with a VERY exhaustive cross index that take up more than half of its 74 pages. There is a lengthy introduction by the author concerning the Constitutional convention.
